Shot of MBTA 1923 Pullman Number 1 East Boston Tunnel Car 0517, as it's being scrapped at Orient Heights Yard. The 1's were the subway cars which replaced trolleys in the East Boston Tunnel. They were unique in that they were the first order of cars to be built to a smaller standard, due to the dimensions of the former trolley tunnel that they were to run in. The cars were extremely dependable, some getting a second life as work cars after their passenger service days were over. 0517 pictured, retained its two-tone grey with orange striping scheme over the years, when most of its type were repainted blue. Here, we see the car being cut with a blow torch as the car's body will be removed from its chassis.
