Rubber and steel.

An overhead view of a rubber-tired Paris subway car. These cars are designated MP59 "Pneu Stock" cars. They were introduced on the RATP during 1963-64. Their design was primarily engineered for quiet and comfort. They use conventional steel rail and wheels as a safety measure, but with the added support of tires running on longitudinal bearing strips made out of concrete or metal "I" beams. The four, ninety-horsepower motors on each motor car, deliver smooth and consistant acceleration whether or not a car is fully loaded or empty, utilizing time-control.
