Trolleys at Middletown, CT StationIn the early years of the 20th Century, the New Haven Railroad electrified some of its branch lines that had potential for frequent service. Out of Middletown, the branches to Berlin (1906) and Meriden (1908) were both electrified for trolley operation.
Cars operated to Berlin until the 1920s.
Connecticut Company trolleys continued operating to Meriden until 1932.
This photo shows a 2-car train at Middletown Station, on the Valley Line. It could have been headed to either destination. I was recently told that trolley service was also
provided from here to Hartford, leaving the Valley Line track in Cromwell,
then via streets to Hartford.
The Air Line bridge is shown in the background.
