Play Ball...

The 2000 World Series between the New York Mets and the New York Yankees brought back the classic "Subway Series" to the Big Apple, and rekindled memories of past Series between the Yankees and the Brooklyn Dodgers or New York Giants when the subway was THE way to get to the games.

More than a year after the Series, NYCTA #9713, one of the famed "Redbird" cars still in service along the #7 Flushing Line, shows off its special "Subway Series" markings as it heads back into Manhattan. The "D" and #4 Lines served Yankee Stadium, while the #7 Line stopped by the front entrance to Shea Stadium.

You can't ride a "Redbird" to the game anymore, however. NYCTA retired the remaining cars in this series in early November 2003. Many of the "Redbirds" were stripped down to their carbodies and barged to several locations off the Atlantic coast, where they were dumped overboard to form artificial reefs.

Both the original Yankee Stadium and Shea Stadium were retired at the end of the 2008 season, replaced by state-of-the-art ballparks built next to their predecessors. The new Yankee Stadium, in addition to its existing rapid transit links, is also served by Metro-North Hudson Line regional trains.
