Orient Heights Yard.

A set of 1923 Pullman East Boston Tunnel Cars sits outside the Orient Heights Yard in preparation for rush-hour service in 1977. These cars were smaller in size than standard Boston subway cars on other lines, as these cars replaced trolleys through the East Boston Tunnel underneath Boston Harbor. As the tunnels were made for smaller trolley dimensions, these cars were designed to fit, and were in size more like large trolleys. Their 26" diameter wheels were 5" smaller than the standard Boston rapid transit wheel. Their oversize Golden Glow headlights made a unique appearance also. (As kids, we thought that the headlights were some sort of a radar device.)
