Montreal Tramways 'Shunter'

One of the most unusual pieces of equipment at the Shore Line Trolley Museum is this unnumbered critter known simply as "the shunter." Montreal Tramways basically mounted control equipment on a Taylor truck and used it as a locomotive. Note the railing with sandbox, gooseneck hand brake and controller behind it; the post holding the trolley pole with the canopy switch mounted to it; and the gong under the floor with a motor gearpan right behind it, just inboard of the wheel. Behind the shunter is Hudson & Manhattan "Black Car" 503.
