Photo of MAX to the Mountain?
MAX to the Mountain?

Well, not exactly. With the telephoto lens, it seems as if Mount Hood is just around the corner from the Gresham Central transit center in Gresham, Ore. as a Hillsboro-bound Blue Line train makes its stop.

From here, the mountain is nearly 50 miles away but, at more than 11,000 feet, seems to tower above the surrounding countryside. Winter snow is still visible on its flanks, and provides some really good spring skiing on its upper slopes.

MAX #106, leading the two-car train, is one of TriMet's 26 mid-1980s-vintage Bombardier light rail cars. The trailing car is one of the agency's 2004-vintage Siemens SD660s in the 300 series. The 106 is "wrapped" with Alaska Airlines advertising; the agency's light rail cars serve as mobile billboards throughout the system.
