Boston type 3 Snowplow 5159 at the Seashore Trolley MuseumBuilt in 1908 by the St. Louis Car Co. these were originally passenger cars in a nice dark green paint scheme. In 1927 the MTA rebuilt 40 of the cars into snowplows. 2 of them survive on the MBTA in Boston today, and 5 of them are at the Seashore Trolley Museum.
Each plow weighs 30.5 tons (61,000 lbs).
Thats about 1500 lbs lighter than a bud car.
A regular streetcar weighs about 15-17 tons.
These cars are used for work service around the museum, especially with the tomlinson coplers (streetcar design of a railroad coupler that automatically connects electrical and brake lines) and our rampcar, 3106.
The task for the day was running up the mainline to retrieve some picinic tables needed at out visitors center.
