"An Ode In to Bowdoin"

In March, two MBTA Blue Line stations will hit the century mark of service, the Blue Line portion of Government Center station, and the very unique Bowdoin Station. Both opened up in March of 1916 when it was decided to close Court Street station. Bowdoin Station has kept true to it's original form with only a touch up in the late 1960's. Since the station does not see a lot of passenger use, it is remarkably clean and intact. The Bowdoin loop is a very tight turnaround for the subway cars, as the loop was originally designed for trolley cars and is very noticeable at the station. Riding around the loop is not allowed these days, though as a kid, I rode the loop many times in all the preceding series of subway cars.

While I doubt there will be little fanfare for Bowdoin's 100th Anniversary, the best gift is that the station will remain open after renovated Government Center Station reopens for service later in March. This station does serve its' purpose, and is not a far walk from Quincy Market. In fact, after a feast at Quincy Market, the little extra walk will do you some good !

Happy Almost 100th, Bowdoin Station !
