The Heart of the Trolley...

Two Orange Line trains meet at the San Diego Trolley's transfer station at 12th and Imperial on the edge of downtown San Diego. The train on the left is heading east toward El Cajon and Santee, while the one on the right is heading into downtown and will terminate back here on another track out of view to the left of the photographer.

The station platforms are directly underneath the Metropolitan Transit System headquarters building, which was, at the time of the photo, wrapped in a fabric "cocoon" for upgrading. Less than two hours after I took this photo, a section of scaffolding underneath the fabric, in the area just to the left of the photo, collapsed and injured two workers.

The mishap caused MTS to shut down the Orange Line for the rest of the day. Blue Line trains continued to run, but were detoured through the yard to the west of the station and up the Bayside right-of-way into downtown.
