Winter-Track Taimping Time! (1)The way a tamper works is very simple-it adds ballast under the rail to raise low spots to provide a smooth surface for the wheel to ride on.
To do this, tampers have steel fingers that get shoved into the ground and vibrated rapidly (like 4 jackhammers). This forces ballast under the ties. Before you tamp, however, you must jack up the rail to the proper height first.
