Making the Grade (Crossing)...

When the MAX Green Line in Portland, Ore. opened in September 2009, light rail riders using the park-and-ride lot at the Main Street stop began meeting trains at grade. This is because the right-of-way alignment required the placement of the parking lot between the tracks and adjacent Interstate 205.

This view is from the Market Street overpass just south of the Main Street stop. The overpass in the background is a pedestrian bridge that provides excellent views of the station area, including the pocket track north of the platform that allows short-turn trains to reverse direction.

The Green Line segment along I-205 includes one other at-grade crossing, at SE Flavel St.
