Photo of Portland Railroad.
Portland Railroad.

I snapped this shot years ago in Scarborough, Maine. I believe it to be a former power sub-station for the Portland Railroad Company. The company began operating horsecars in 1860 as the Portland and Forest Avenue Railroad Company. In 1865, the name was shortened to Portland Railroad Company. Later, they ran trolleys in southeast Maine on a fairly extensive network - from the north (Yarmouth), to the south (Saco), and east (Cape Elizabeth) to the west (Gorham). All service ended by 1941.
