Photo of Lighting up the tunnel.
Lighting up the tunnel.

A 1923 Pullman Number 1 East Boston Tunnel subway car sits at State Street Station with Golden Glow headlight ablaze in this view. The station, formerly Devonshire prior to 1967, sits under the historic 1770 Boston Massacre site. The Pullman's headlight was an after-market addition, placed on the cars by the MTA for visibility at the time of the 1952 East Boston Extension to Orient Heights, which travels along the seacoast.

Photographed by Paul Joyce, May 20, 1979.
